How to Answer 'Tell Me About Yourself'

It is the most common interview question on the planet, yet it is consistently the one candidates butcher the most. "Tell me about yourself" is not an invitation to recite your resume from birth to present day. It is a strategic opening to pitch your professional narrative.

The 90-Second Framework: Past, Present, Future

Structure your answer using a very specific chronological timeline that takes exactly 90 seconds to deliver.

Present (20 Seconds): Start with where you are right now. Your current title, your current focus, and the most impressive project you are currently touching. "Currently, I'm a Senior Developer at X, where I lead our core infrastructure team..."

Past (40 Seconds): Jump back and connect the dots. Highlight exactly two past roles or experiences that directly built the skills required for the job you are interviewing for today. Omit everything irrelevant.

Future (30 Seconds): Stick the landing. Explain why you are here right now. "While I've loved my time at X, I am looking to transition to a role that involves more Y, which is what excites me so much about this opportunity with your team."
